"Double Whammy" is a fun ride that totally embraces the tropes of detective fiction, updates them (for 1987), and acts as a serviceable power fantasy for photo journalists that have a deep interest in bass fishing. There are a number of lines and setups that clang in 2024 and per the genre the two (sort of three) female characters with page time fit very neatly into trope-y roles that only serve to titillate, serve a male character's interest, or just hold a plot device without having much of an arc. Overall, the sheer inventiveness of the mystery's setup, the hyper-specificity of the fishing lore, and Hiaasen's love of Florida and his humor make this a compelling read and a successful detective mystery.
