Oliver Burkeman: Meditations for Mortals (2024, Farrar, Straus & Giroux) 4 stars

A quick and slow read on finitude.

5 stars

I like Oliver Burkeman's writing and enjoyed his previous 10,000 weeks. He has a very plain and approachable way of talking about our mortality that feels welcome and healthy. If you're in a place where you want to think about your life, where it is, and what you want to do with it, this is a good resource if the his writing suits who you are.

Owen Pomery: The Hard Switch (Hardcover, 2023, Avery Hill Publishing Limited) 4 stars

The time approaches when the mineral that makes inter-system jump navigation possible will run out. …

Another beautiful artifact.

4 stars

Per usual, Mr. Pomery can build the hell out of a world. The characterizations are great, the world has a novel flavor, and it’s a jewel of a slice. The only short coming is that unlike Victory Point, it doesn’t feel as complete. It’s a story that begs for more, and perhaps one day it might be a thing, but what’s here is great.
