Review of 'Hawk & Dove volume one' on 'Goodreads'

Hawk & Dove are a personal favorite duo of mine, no matter what form they're in or which team it is. (I love you too, Don & Holly!)

My first experience with Hawk & Dove was the 5 issue special written by Barbara Randall Kesel & Karl Kesel and drawn by Rob Liefeld in 1988--Granted I didn't get to read it until 2011, but you know--loved it to pieces. So when I saw Liefeld was back on board for the New52 release of Hawk & Dove I knew it'd be good. I'll admit, my opinion is biased thanks to both a) being a big Liefeld fan and b) loving anything Hawk & Dove, but I did enjoy this book quite a bit on its own merits and was glad to have read it issue by issue when it first came out.

It contains all eight issues of the Hawk & Dove series before it was canceled, which is split into three story arcs:

Issues 1-5 are written by Sterling Gates--the plotline? Hawk & Dove vs Swan & Condor. It's a fun, action-packed storyline revolving around Condor's grab for supernatural power, and Dawn/Dove's relationship with Deadman. My personal favorite character to come from the mix was Swan. <3

Issue 6 is where Rob Liefeld took over for writing. It's a standalone crossover with Batman & Robin vs Blockbuster and a necromancer. Full of puns and high tensions between two great duos.

Issues 7&8 are the final storyline that revolves around Hawk being hunted by a group called the D'yak. It's short & sweet and has some great moments where Hank and Dawn try and work out their relationship after Dawn's break up.

Liefeld does a great job on the artwork, and his colorist Matt Yackey (along with Ross Hughes & Andy Troy) were a great team-up. It's bright, stylized and just looks great. There's a lot of color in this book from blues, to reds, to yellows--a great contrast to most of the other books in the DC Universe lately who happen to be very fond of muted and dark colors. It's a nice change of pace and I love the sketches included in the back.

Plus, it includes the textless covers, like most TPB, which is always a treat.

I personally enjoyed it and recommend it. <3
