A month after reading [b:Plainsong|77156|Plainsong (Plainsong, #1)|Kent Haruf|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388200586l/77156.SY75.jpg|1402373] by [a:Kent Haruf|16266|Kent Haruf|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1594045311p2/16266.jpg] I've finished its sequel, an unassuming novel about small-town life which I found deserved that overused epithet "unputdownable" -- or at least every time I put it down I wanted to pick it up again.
It has many of the same characters as those that appeared in the earlier book, and a few others that didn't. I loved one of the new ones who is quite prominent in this one, DJ, an 11-year-old boy who is kind in an unassuming and unselfconscious way to everyone he meets, except, occasionally, those who are unkind to others.
Otherwise, like the first book, it shows the joys and sorrows of small-town life. There are no extraordinary heroes doing extraordinary dees. All the dramas are those of everyday life, and yet [a:Kent Haruf|16266|Kent Haruf|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1594045311p2/16266.jpg] manages to make them engaging and readable.
