Amanda Quraishi reviewed The Swimmers by Julie Otsuka
Good, not Great

Content warning General description of story.
I read this just a few weeks after finishing Julie Otsuka's first book, which knocked my socks off. The Swimmers was good, and I enjoyed it, but it really lacked the impact of The Buddha in the Attic. It also felt cobbled together as the first section was a strong metaphor (no spoilers), and I was hoping that it would continue for the duration. But it turned quickly to a story about her mother's health and navigating the healthcare system, and the tie in wasn't very seamless.
I did enjoy it, though. I think my expectations were just set too high by Buddha in the Attic.
