A book about three women raising a child in the hills isn’t something I thought would appeal to me, but this book handles not only the intricate relationships between its characters but also how they as individuals fit into the larger world around them, the one they were seeking to escape. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that managed to allow each character to maintain they’re own individuality while still caring so much about everyone around them. I’ve also never read a book that spent so much time talking about isolation that also managed to tackle societal problems like poverty, consumption, and the exploitation of natural resources by corporate interests. A very elegant book I’ll be pressing into the hands of other readers any time I get a chance.
