Really well-woven tale incorporating semi-fantastic elements with a homey realistic feel that warms all of Cleary's writing.

Too many lacunae
4 stars
I respect the editor's choice to preserve the lacunae, indicating places where the record is/was incomplete, but there were so many it distracted from the narrative.

This book is very military so far. I can handle quickly shifting viewpoints and not understanding exactly what's going on. But if the whole book is just soldiers in armies in war, I may look elsewhere.
