The third book in the much venerated Travis McGee series, this one finds Travis traveling to Texas to help out a damsel in distress. Things take an early and ugly turn very quickly and Travis gets embroiled in some crazy things, including killings in the high desert with a snake and disappearing bodies.

As is often the case, I think, when Travis leaves Florida, this isn't one of the stronger outings. It often felt a little forced, without as much interesting internal dialog that makes the whole series great. Of course, it is still better than 90% of the mysteries written!

In this case, you surely knew where the "girl" was going to end up - either with Travis or dead. But the story clipped along at a nice pace and it is just great going back to reading these books. Comfort food for the brain.
