I like to think that all great books deal with our inability to comprehend time. But this needs an asterisk for Terrace Story, as it actually about space. Leichter sets this up intentionally, making the time aspects of the four connected stories in this novel complex and uncertain. The book even talks about time a lot, but I don't fall for it - the book is about spaces. The ones we inhabit, the ones in our minds and the ones we remember or yearn for, and how they interrelate. I adore Leichter's ability to weave stories on multiple layers, like a phrase thrown out by a character appearing again and again in different contexts and setting off little fireworks of new insight and meaning and connection.
