Frances Hardinge, Emily Gravett: The Forest of a Thousand Eyes (2024, Two Hoots) 5 stars

Costa Award-winning Frances Hardinge's gripping story of a young girl's daring mission through a natural …

Beautiful illustrated book

5 stars

This is a beautiful story, full of suspense and courage. It's set in a world where the Forest has taken over all the space and humans have to live in small isolated communities inside a high crumbling wall, going out for supplies and always on the lookout for the many dangers coming from the Forest. As an adult, I'd have happily read a much longer book set in that world, and I can imagine a great animation movie based on it! as it is, it's quite short (just over 100 pages) and perfect for children who like adventures and exploring. I love the illustrations by Emily Gravett.

Rebecca Makkai: The Great Believers (2019, Penguin Books) 4 stars

A dazzling new novel of friendship and redemption in the face of tragedy and loss …

The Great Believers, by Rebecca Makkai. Set in Chicago from 1986 and Paris in 2015, and it's about gay men and the women in their lives, AIDS, relationships. Well written and engaging, made me research the history of AIDS (grim, another pandemic of our times and, interestingly, mainly transmitted by heterosexual people) and of condoms (they weren't used to prevent the transmission of diseases before) #TheGreatBelievers #RebeccaMakkai #bookclub @bookstodon @kiarazard@mastodon.online (posted here as well as on mastodon)

Lionel Shriver: The new republic (2012, HarperCollins) No rating

"Ostracized as a kid, Edgar Kellogg has always yearned to be popular. A disgruntled New …

A quite bitter and judgemental ex-lawyer turned journalist is sent to a remote (fictional) land where a terrorist group has come to the world's attention. I'm at around 30% and it's not that easy to read, but it's keeping my interest up. The main character is not relatable but somehow I wish him good! @bookstodon #TheNewRepublic #LionelShriver
