Fairy tales are the root of my love for fantasy, but as I've grown up so have my stories. Just as the world of Cinderella is to A Court of Thorns and Roses, the world of Aladdin is to The City of Brass.
In this book, S.A. Chakraborty brings those Arabic fairytales to life with vivid realism. The magic is still there, but much matured. Because, of course genies were slaves. Her worldbuilding is superb and well integrated with the story letting us learn alongside the main character about the world of the jinn, with all its strife, rivalries, and history.
I'm definitely going to continue the trilogy, though as a standalone book, the convoluted ending lost a star from me.
