I cannot write a review of this book because I am not worthy. The writing is beyond brilliant. Every single word sits in the right place and in the right order to deliver a story that creeps right under your skin and sticks there. The edition I read was a 25th anniversary edition with an updated commentary from Toni Morrison. She points out some technical issues she has with the book 25 years on. Well, if I could write with a teeny tiny fraction of of the quality in this book, which she criticises, my writing would be over the moon.
The writing and the content go hand-in-hand. Her writing made it possible to tell us Pecola's story. As she said, she also tried to write about the people in Pecola's life without pointing fingers at them or blaming them for anything. I am dumbfounded at how beautifully she did that. It seems odd to use the word beautiful about some events that are terrible, tragic, awful, and so on, but that is how powerful her writing is.
I am ashamed that it has taken me so long to start reading Toni Morrison. I knew one should read her, but I simply never got around to it. I will make up for this oversight now. Not only is her writing utterly brilliant, but her stories are necessary to read.
