Review of 'The Conspiracy against the Human Race' on 'Goodreads'
3 stars
I am a huge, huge fan of Ligotti’s fiction, and I bought this book essentially because I was being a completist.
"Conspiracy" is nonfiction, an extended essay on the philosophy of pessimism and the existential horror of consciousness. It is a really dark and bleak outlook on life, and normally I like dark and bleak.
As with all of Ligotti’s work it is beautifully written, and for a book this nihilistic it is strikingly readable. But although I’m sympathetic to Ligotti’s world view, I can’t say that I agree with it, and I was left with a sort of “yeah, so?” feeling at the end. As a Ligotti completist I am glad I read it but I can’t really recommend it to anyone other than another completist.
