Review of 'Caste' on 'Goodreads'

Every white person in the United States of America should be required to read this book. It is a powerful expose of the caste system in this country, a system analogous to those of India and Nazi Germany; a system so deeply embedded in the history and structure of our nation that the author estimates 80-90% of members of the dominant caste (white people) regularly exercise unconscious bias.

As "woke" as I thought I was around race, Wilkerson demonstrates that I and others have a long way to go before we will eliminate the structural caste system in which the most degraded white person can still think that he/she is better than the most accomplished African American, in which we can elect a racist and immigrant hating president who exploits the caste system for his own personal gain, and in which people on whose backs this country was built continue to be treated as lower caste.

The author interweaves mesmerizing anecdotes from her personal history with stories from our country's history and the histories of India and Germany that illustrate how deep the caste system reaches. It is an eminently accessible and important read.
