Grand-scale, century hopping, sci-fi epic. Worthy of the award, it sees the decline of the human race met by the rise of an ‘alien’ intelligence; you find yourself sympathising desperately for the Portiids as they go through some of the same developmental and social leaps as humanity has. By the end… there is a deep sense of hope to the narrative which makes this story a repeat read.
