Dav reviewed James: A Novel by Percival Everett

It is an absolute travesty that this didn’t win the Booker. It is a retelling of Huck Finn from the perspective of the enslaved Jim - in much the same vein as Wide Sargasso Sea revisits Jane Eyre, it gives an independent voice to the black character within. Uncomfortable in places and exhilarating in others, it finally allows a character of colour to take back ownership of their own narrative. Loved it.
Edit: having now read the winner of the Booker, I reiterate: this SHOULD have won.
