Tom Wolfe books always cheer me up somehow, probably because his characters are just so... morose.

I admit I rather lost the thread in this one though. Too many characters, too many sub-plots. Entertaining, but I arrived at the end somewhat confused and spent a lot of time backtracking to see what characters were doing.
