Derek Walcott: Omeros (1992, Farrar, Straus and Giroux) 3 stars

Review of 'Omeros' on 'Goodreads'

5 stars

I read Omeros in my sophomore poetry seminar. It was a bad class, and I really disliked my professor. But he did put Omeros on the syllabus, and that almost made the rest of the class worthwhile. Walcott takes these elements of western canon and re-appropriates them, leaving them familiar but different and distinct. It's an epic work and the poetry is moving (I don't particularly like epic poems for their poetry).
