The world is burnt and some people just have to keep living there instead of making it to the great escape ships.
Fast and smart with some wicked turns.

The New York Mycological Society is perhaps the most famous, founded by avant-garde composer John Cage, emerging in its current form in 1962, out of a class he was teaching at The New School in Manhattan.

I did not expect to see John Cage here!
One especially notable figure who dealt with Massee was none other than Beatrix Potter. The author of The Tale of Peter Rabbit is less well known for her significant contributions as a mycologist and nature illustrator. Prior to her authorial fame, Potter spent a great deal of time in Kew's herbarium, producing hundreds of gorgeous illustrations of fungi, among other organisms, even presenting a paper, "On the Germination of the Spores of Agaricineae," to the Linnaean Society in 1897; at the time, women were all but forbidden from pursuing a proper scientific education, and were prohibited from scientific societies, so her uncle delivered the paper in her stead.

It’s a great concept and handled so well. This book dances around what’s hidden beneath the surface of Huckleberry Finn - the humanity and dehumanization of black Americans.
It’s still an adventure story and it moves fast and is an easy read, but delivers a look under the surface of every possible interaction. Some of it felt very magical and there’s a scene in an engine room that feels like the best parts of Catch-22.
Very happy for all the recommendations that led me to this book.
