@anaulin Someone at work has a reading goal in pages but maybe it’s useful to think about books like a traveler thinks about cities. Each book is a different world, even if it’s small. I want to visit 20 worlds given the kind of sized worlds I like.

You’re going on a lot of journeys!

commented on The Power Broker by Robert A. Caro

Robert A. Caro: The Power Broker (Paperback, 1975) 5 stars

One of the most acclaimed books of our time, winner of both the Pulitzer and …

The beginning of this is really good - Caro takes his time establishing just how filthy rich Moses is, what kind of a person he is. We meet his family, who are very intense - and see why he starts to believe in Public Service as an ideal.

Ray Nayler: The Mountain in the Sea (Hardcover, 2023, Weidenfeld & Nicolson) 5 stars

When pioneering marine biologist Dr. Ha Nguyen is offered the chance to travel to the …

Oy when the scientist destroys her deck and kills her connection. I didn’t see this coming until it started unfolding. So good.

When the scientist explains that “we don’t have the capacity as a species for that kind of happy ending”

David Grann: Killers of the Flower Moon (2017, Vintage) 4 stars

A Dark Darker than Dirt under a Coffin

This book carried me along and I had trouble stopping the ride. I also had to text people and talk about it. And it made me uncomfortable. My friend Ellen passed it to me at lunch, which seemed unusual but I get it now. I want to give it to other people and I've told people to read it. Which seems strange since it's been popular and made into a blockbuster movie. But uh, it deserves it.

Highly recommended. (★ ★ ★ ★ ★)

The first section is a murder mystery. The Osage are being killed! We attempt to find who done it! We investigate, we get autopsies and hire detectives and we do our darn best, but it's just so hard and mysteriously every lead dries up and every witness dies and why?! Who can save the Osage? We can't do it and maybe it's impossible for us.

Robert Sheckley: The Status Civilization (Paperback, 1960, Signet) 4 stars

Barrent had been tried, convicted, and memory-washed on Earth-an Earth strangely altered and stratified by …

Found this in the free pile of Inquiring Minds bookstore in Saugerties! Can’t believe it. I have been finding Robert Sheckley books randomly throughout my life and enjoy every one of them. He’s a really under appreciated early SF author. I feel like I might be his biggest living fan.
