Writing a history of China is no mean feat. Keay manages to give a comprehensive account of the dynasties and dynamics of the Middle Kingdom (and the early Republic) without lapsing into simplistic sensationalism. Because of this, it's often pretty dry reading, but I actually like that. It makes the anecdotes so much more pleasing to read.
