Novel or novella? Horror, sci-fi, fantasy, gothic fiction, or all of the above?

Refusing to be pigeonholed, shoehorned, or classified into an appropriate taxonomy (unlike Ms. Potter and her love of mycology), I found elements of all of these genres (and more) woven elegantly in this first book of the Sworn Soldiers series.

Sure, I devoured it, but I wish I'd savored it! No fear, there's another book in the series that I, of course, immediately dove into - "What Feasts at Night".

I will mention that having read a few books in Kingfisher's The Saint of Steel series, her novel "Nettle & Bone", and then this one most recently - I tend to favor her darker, more horror-tinged fiction. Regardless, thoroughly enjoyed!
