The thing about doing a Great Gatsby riff is that you ask me to consider whether I'd simply target be reading The Great Gatsby. To this book's credit, the answer is only mildly "yes"—although it's not as good a Gatsby as Gatsby and the supernatural elements feel a bit superfluous, its discussion of race and queerness dovetail well with the source material and leave me with a positive feeling on the whole.
