I really did want to finish this book since I promise NetGalley that I will review a book prior to its release date but I just couldn't bring myself to do so. Being a huge fan of dystopian and sword and sorcery fantasy, Seeker seemed like it would be right up my alley. It's billed as being for those of us who enjoyed The Hunger Games and George R. R. Martin's Songs of Ice and Fire series, and boy is that overselling it! I was hoping for life and death power struggles, high adventure, and compelling characters based on its comparison to those series. What a letdown.
There isn't a single truly interesting character by the halfway point where I threw in the towel, and frankly I find myself totally uninvested in which corners of the love triangle eventually win out. The premise of the book seemed promising but it completely bogged down in the sort of insipid teen drama that I could see on a kid's Facebook page. I got tiny glimpses of what could have been some interesting world building, with whipswords and portals and promises of adventure but those promises were broken as the tale kept falling back into angst and whining.
