A bit long but worth the trip

This one was just interesting enough for me to keep going, and I'm glad I did because it really got its hooks in me toward the end.
But it really could use some trimming up. The main character is pretty bland for most of the book and only seems to perk up once his role in the greater plot is fully revealed.
I did like the author's "game" here of taking real people and events and filling in the "gaps" in the record with supernatural nonsense. The feeling that this story could be the hidden backdrop to some real life events in WWII and the Cold War was a big part of the appeal.
In short, it can be a bit of a slog and it's overly long but if you can make it to the end it's worth it.
