Fantastic Fantasy Classic

Jordan's Wheel of Time is a true classic of fantasy literature (and, no offense meant to any authors out there, it's also actually a finished series. ;) ). Eye of the World is the first book in the series, and it's a great read.
The pacing of introducing new facettes of the colorful world and it's (mostly) unique concepts is well done. No bigger lore-dumps, nothing terribly overwhelming, but enough regular reveals to continuously drawing the curtains back more and more (and even at the end of this book the reader hasn't seen nowhere near everything).
There is a certain level of coming-of-age to the story, but it's never overpowering the actual story. Sure, some characters might show behaviour, that's not terribly well explained (Nynaeve, looking at you), but for the biggest part, character motivations make sense (at least in hindsight).
So, if the idea of reading 14 jam-packed books …

Schwer lesbar, wenig nutzbarer Inhalt, kein Genuss.

Ich hatte dieses Buch seinerzeit bei einem Krautfunding von Ulysses bekommen. Während die eigenen Werke des Verlags aus der Kampagne wirklich lesbar und zum guten Teil als Meta-Literatur nützlich und interessant sind, ist dieses Buch wirklich nicht zu empfehlen. Die Qualität der Übersetzung schwankt zwischen mäßig und grottig schlecht, dazu kommt ein wirklich unsauberes Lektorat. Das nimmt wirklich den Spaß am Lesen, macht es teilweise schwer bis unmöglich, dem Inhalt zu folgen.
Und selbst dieser Inhalt bringt nicht ansatzweise die Qualität, die anhand der teilnehmenden Branchengrößen (Kulp, Germain, Mentzer, Shea, Jacobs, Baker, etc.) zu erwarten wäre. Viele Ratschläge wiederholen sich, manchmal ist Intention und Stoßrichtung nicht wirklich klar.
Insgesamt wirklich enttäuschend.

Wissenschaft, die Spaß macht.

Bücher über wissenschaftliche Themen können ja verdammt zäh sein. Man fühlt sich manchmal eher wie in einer drögen Vorlesen und nur sehr bedingt unterhalten. Bei Harari ist das völlig anders.
Die Geschichte der Menschheit "kurz" (der Wälzer ist immer noch dick genug) und so lesbar zu beschreiben, dabei aber immer wissenschaftlich fundiert und nachvollziehbar, das ist schon eine Meisterleistung. Man versteht auch sofort, woher einige Entwicklungen der Menschheit kommen, ohne sich dabei belehrt zu fühlen.
Eine absolute Empfehlung. Vielleicht nichts für die ganz jungen und (die meisten) Teens, aber Jugendlich und alle Erwachsenen sollten das Buch ganz dringend lesen.

Tolles Buch, nicht nur für Jugendliche

Wow. Dass ich ein Buch in 3 Tagen durchgelesen (möchte sagen: inhaliert) habe, ist mir auch lange nicht mehr passiert. Schon am ersten Tag hab ich während 8 Stunden Zugfahrt rund 250 Seiten weggelesen.
Das Ding ist super spannend, wirklich gut geschrieben (und sehr anständig übersetzt!). Außerdem ist die Geschichte in allen Facetten glaubwürdig, was bei dem Setting nicht immer der Fall sein muss.
Eine absolute Empfehlung für alle Bücherratten und jene, die es werden wollen.
