Endurance: A Year in Space, a Lifetime of Discovery is a 2017 memoir by American astronaut Scott Kelly and Margaret Lazarus Dean. The book details Kelly's life, as well as that of his twin brother Mark, as they became naval aviators and test pilots, and were both selected for NASA Astronaut Group 16. Kelly recounts his four spaceflights, with an emphasis on the ISS year long mission, in which he participated. The book's title was inspired by Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage, a 1959 book which detailed the epic efforts of Ernest Shackleton and his crew to survive after their exploratory ship the Endurance became trapped and was crushed by Antarctic sea ice in 1915. During his year aboard the Space Station, Kelly would occasionally thumb through the account of his predecessor explorer's harrowing story to try and put his own mission's inevitable difficulties in perspective.

Great storytelling. Remarkably direct in parts, such as the CO2 failings of the ISS, the differences between the launch experience from Russia and from the USA. It kept me turning pages the whole time. Remarkable to me is how Kelly seemed to always have a long term goal for himself.

This was an infinitely fascinating book. I was surprised I enjoyed it so much because I never really cared about space exploration all that much. I was a young child when man first walked on the moon and of course I remember the hoopla and celebration. It was on every channel, all 5 of them, on the tv. I could hardly escape it. Everything was space food "like the astronauts eat" TANG! But since I was a young child, I just didn't care, I don't know why not. Maybe I was too preoccupied by my Barbies and swimming that summer. Maybe I thought it was "boys stuff", idk. At any rate, it didn't capture my imagination, then or now. Which is weird because I do like watching shows and reading books about space and my mind become boggled by the "billions and billions" of galaxies, etc. I …

The book is well written and it's pretty interesting to read about the contemporary space program, life on the international space station, and how Scott ended up there. But I wasn't enjoying myself enough while reading it, so I stopped about a quarter of the way through. I heard a recommendation for this & it was real enthusiastic, but I didn't find the part of the book that I read to be especially exciting, it seemed a bit of a paint by numbers memoir and it was becoming a slog by the point I bailed.

Maybe I wasn't in the mood for nonfiction just now? Everyone seems to be really enchanted by this book so it could just be me being cranky.
