Lots to like here, but ultimately not as good as I wanted, and had hoped.

It's been a long time since I dipped into the epic fantasy genre (I burned out on the meanderings of the Song of Ice and Fire after A Feast for Crows, and don't think I've been back since).

There is a lot to like about this book. It is epic, and it is fantasy, and the world-building is both rich and not beholden to the standard tropes of medieval (or even early modern/17th century-esque as this seems to be) societies. It's a world that doesn't have the typical misogyny or homophobia by which some authors announce the authenticity of their settings, and is better for it. Nothing about such things really adds realism to a setting, while realistic relationships between people certainly does.

The point of view characters are for the most part sympathetic and sometimes noble, though sometimes a little too much so.

While I welcome the overall positive …

Fantastic standalone fantasy

I’ve long been intrigued by Samantha Shannon’s ‘Bone Season’ series, but couldn’t quite bring myself to start such a long, as-yet-unfinished saga without at least getting a sense for whether I liked the author’s style. Shannon publishing a standalone fantasy novel seemed like a good opportunity to find out.

Initially I got bogged down a bit by the intricate world-building and high number of characters in this book, but once I adjusted, I was hooked. Ended up devouring the rest in short order and loving it. Truly epic standalone fantasy novels seem rare these days; finding one I enjoy this much is a gift.

How did I not write this one up yet? Maybe because y’all know it but anyway or it’s been long enough that I doubt it I’d do such a long book justice in a short review?

Okay, so fantasy epic thick enough that you can knock someone out with it (always a plus, if someone interrupts your reading you can make them be quiet). In that, it has a detailed world and history underpinning the story. It has plenty of magic and dragons; around which cultural and historical differences following the defeat of the nameless one a millennia ago. The west being Virtudom, opposing all dragons (even the huggable ones in the east that ain’t done nothin wrong) and worshipping the knighthood of their founder, while the east merrily rides around on dragons but prevents anyone from approaching for fear of a draconic plague (bit of a Europe-China parallel). The …

A globe trotting fantasy epic that breaks many conventions. The world is a fuzzy mirror of our own during the late medieval period, but there seems to be little colonialism and a broad racial diversity among the elites. Women seem to hold high status positions, both political and martial, with little discrimination. Sexual preference seems to be well tolerated but there are still arranged marriages intended to establish strong lineages. Altogether these make for a fantasy world that can focus on the cultural differences between different parts of the world, and tells a grand story about people putting their prejudices and self interest aside to tackle a global existential threat, the sort of thing we can probably do with more of.
My critique is that lineage and class are not really treated with the same critique, relying on more traditional chosen one heritage tropes. There's some lip service towards disrupting …

3.5/5

There was a lot of really great ideas but there was a severe problem with pacing in this book. The first half was really slow and drawn out court intrigue and then the second half felt like we were being thrown around half a dozen locations because the plot needed to actually start progressing. There were too many coincidences that were not fleshed out well enough and were clearly added to push the plot forward.
It definitely felt like the book was intended to be longer but sections were cut and stitched together loosely, leading to a disjoint plot. It would have worked far better as a duology or even a trilogy.
Overall the idea was interesting but the execution was not up to what I was hoping for based on how well received the book was, which was very disappointing.

Enjoyed the book but did find it slow in places. Lots of good elements here, including:
- interesting view of elemental type dragons (fire vs water), and different societies reacting very differently to dragons
- great, strong female characters - in fact this world's history seems to mainly revolve around female heroes and leaders
- good character growth for several of the main characters
- LGB friendly (no trans characters I noticed, though not against such a thing either, just not there). Gay and lesbian relationships taken for granted, as main characters

I wasn't as crazy about the likeability of the characters though - while I didn't hate any of them I also never really felt that I much liked any of them, I just didn't find them approachable for some reason. I probably liked Loth best but, while important, he's not one of the most central characters. It was …

I enjoyed this book so much. It's epic fantasy at its finest, with great worldbuilding, a large and varied cast of characters, and plenty of action with very real stakes.

Some highlights:
- The dialogue, which really helps flesh out the characters, giving them each a unique personality.
- A mix of mythologies from around the world weaved seamlessly into this one world.
- A little bit of romance.
- Court intrigue.
- An epic battle scene.
- A diverse (in more ways than one) cast of characters.
- An engaging story that kept me hooked from the first page.

I'm so glad I picked this book up, and can only hope it becomes part of the canon of fantasy.
