"A gorgeous, darkly humorous memoir for readers of Cheryl Strayed about a woman overcoming dramatic loss and finding reinvention, as well as a portrait of a generation used to assuming they're entitled to everything--based on this award-winning writer's New Yorker article 'Thanksgiving in Mongolia'"--

A well-written and compelling memoir by the writer who is probably best known for her popular magazine piece about having a miscarriage while on assignment in Mongolia. That experience forms the centerpiece of the story, but the rest of her life is made equally interesting by the telling. As soon as I read the following passage in the first few pages, I knew this would be a book to which anyone who has had the rug pulled out from under his or her life -- myself included-- could strongly relate: "Until recently, I lived in a world where lost things could always be replaced.  A brief memoir by an accomplished New Yorker Magazine writer.
Levy writes well about a miscarriage, a loss too often not given the weight it deserves.
The Rules Do Not Apply could serve as a cautionary tale for anyone who is young, physically attractive, endowed with a strong social network, highly intelligent and talented. Some of the rules do, in fact, apply. To you. You may be jetting to exotic places, writing about them and living well in New York City, where you go to parties with bold face names, but there may be wants and needs that elude you.

I didn't know a thing about Ariel Levy until I saw her on the calendar for Sixth and Eye's author series in DC. The word "feminist" jumped out at me so I bought a ticket and the book came with the price of admission. I'm glad this chanced across my radar - Levy is a strong writer who is willing to take an honest look in the mirror with everyone watching. The book centers around her own experience with motherhood (something to put off until later, then something to pursue with urgency, then a heartbreaking yet beautiful disaster). This book reminds women that we can do a lot, but no one can have it all.
