Chelsea Liew - the famous Singaporean model - is on death row for the murder of her ex-husband. She swears she didn't do it, Singh thinks she didn't do it, but Chelsea's husband was shot at point blank range - and she had the best motive - he was taking her kids away from her. Like others have mentioned, Flint misses no opportunity to remind the reader how fat her main character is. Not sure why she would make him fat, when she clearly has fat issues. He sweats through his clothes because he's so fat. He snores and keeps the whole house up because he's so fat. When he gets into a car, he has to put the seat back because he's so fat. Every chair he sits in creaks under his weight because he's so fat. Half the time he's not even introduced in a scene by name, just "the fat man." To say it was distracting is an understatement.

The other thing I found annoying about this was that the reader finds out clues before certain characters do so by the time we're reading the character finding out about a game-changer clue, it's no longer the mic drop the author might have …

I like fat fisted dogged detectives intent on the trail and persisting despite ever-short sighted administration so Inspector Singh had an easy time entertaining me. The Malaysian setting was appealing as well. One interesting conundrum- the murder victim converts to Islam before he is murdered so he can screw his wife out child custody when their divorce goes through. This leads to the court deciding after his murder that the sons are Muslim and therefore must be removed from their non-Muslim mother and raised by foster parents. This is Sharia law apparently and in Malaysia administers justice to Muslims. I wondered if this was true, and if it had ever happened before that a parent lost custody of their children because of their non-islamic (or any other religion really) status. I was satisfied with the resolution, and a little surprised. A relaxing formula mystery with a unique setting and likable …

A Sikh detective on the outs with his Singaporean bosses goes to Kuala Lumpur to investigate a murder, seemingly commited by a woman from Singapore. The victim is her ex-husband, who was so determined to gain custody of their children that he converted to Islam to take the case to a sharia court, where he would be more likely to win. Singh suspects the woman, who claims innocence, though she's hardly a shrinking violet and was determined to fight for her children's custody, may be telling the truth. A nicely plotted mild mystery with an interesting setting.
