I really enjoyed this collection of poetry and stories. Brooks is without question an important American writer, and was hugely talented. If you are interested in more or more recent pieces by her, she did write quite a bit after this edition was put together (a new edition came out recently.)

There is a lot that I could say about this book, but I've already done so on my blog, so I'll just refer you to that, in case you want some more in-depth information and a taste of what's in the book itself: outsideofacat.wordpress.com/2013/07/28/he-is-fat-and-fine-chocolate-girl-ballads-gwendolyn-brooks/
