Fun old-school caper with posthuman sci-fi tropes.

An entertaining mash-up between old-school gentleman thief stories and 21st century posthumanist sci-fi concepts.

Full of fun ideas, that are thrown at you fast, with little explanation.

It's also clearly the beginning of a series, with a lot left unresolved.

I was not impressed.

While it was definitely creative, it was also impenetrable with too much going on. I read the first half. Put it down and read a different book. Then I started it all over and got about 3/4 of the way through it before just quitting. The idea that people are just data is... unsatisfactory to me.

Also, Rajaniemi referred to a particular character going into "autism mode" for things she had to focus on tightly. This didn't sit well with me. Perhaps it's a colloqialism in Finnish.

pseudo-intellectual nonsense.

1) ”As always, before the warmind and I shoot each other, I try to make small talk. ‘Prisons are always the same, don't you think?’”

2) “‘This certainly does not seem like a lively neighbourhood.’ I indicate the starry field around us. ‘Where are we?’ ‘The Neptunian Trojan belt. Arse-end of nowhere. I waited here for a long time, when she went to get you. "You have a lot to learn about being a criminal. It's all about the waiting. Boredom punctuated by flashes of sheer terror. Sort of like war.’ ‘Oh, war was much better,’ she says excitedly. ‘We were in the Protocol War. I loved it. You get to think so fast. Some of the things we did - we stole a moon, you know. It was amazing. Metis, just before the Spike: Mieli put a strangelet bomb in to push it out of orbit, like fireworks, …

Review of 'The Quantum Thief (Jean le Flambeur, #1)' on 'Storygraph'

My first attempt at reading The Quantum Thief was during my last year of grad school. I barely made it through the first few chapters because it required more deciphering than I had energy for at that time. I vowed to pick it up again once I had my brainmeats back, and was not disappointed.

Perhaps my favourite part of the experience of reading this book was the lack of exposition used to get me emotionally invested. That said, I was constantly aware I was reading as I was reading. This isn't entirely a bad thing, but readers who prefer straight-up escapism and losing themselves for hours in a setting they can seamlessly slip into -- this isn't that story. There is work to be done here, and I think the payoff is worth it.

I am definitely looking forward to the rest of this trilogy, and would recommend it …
