A missing girl on a journey of revenge and a Serial—like podcast following the clues she's left behind.

Sadie hasn't had an easy life. Growing up on her own, she's been raising her sister Mattie in an isolated small town, trying her best to provide a normal life and keep their heads above water.

But when Mattie is found dead, Sadie's entire world crumbles. After a somewhat botched police investigation, Sadie is determined to bring her sister's killer to justice and hits the road following a few meager clues to find him.

When West McCray—a radio personality working on a segment about small, forgotten towns in America—overhears Sadie's story at a local gas station, he becomes obsessed with finding the missing girl. He starts his own podcast as he tracks Sadie's journey, trying to figure out what happened, hoping to find her before it's too late. source: us.macmillan.com/books/9781250300911

Sadie knows who killed her sister. She just doesn't know where to find him- but she can fix that. Place from place, lies stacked on lies, nothing can stop her from getting her revenge. Not the heart stopping memories. Not the equally dangerous people in her path. Not the idea that she might die.

Cards on the table, I had no idea what this book was about, beyond tracking down the main character's sister's killer, and I was not at all prepared for the horrifying amount of content about molestation. Had I known I probably wouldn't have picked this book up, and if I had, I would have at least been more prepared mentally for that sort of storyline. So it's hard for me to judge exactly how I feel about this book, since I spent most of it shell shocked.

It's hard …

First up, if you're interested in reading Sadie, do check out the audiobook version, it is so well done. Sadie has a stutter and Rebecca Soler reads it in a way that conveys Sadie's frustration at not getting the words out. It's full cast, so no dodgy fake accents for dialogue but also the podcast sections are totally believable as a podcast. There's even subtle background noise that you would expect if you were recording an interview out and about.

It alternates between "The Girls" podcast and Sadie's narrative, the investigation following Sadie's trail. It shows how difficult a missing persons case can be, they find loads of clues to Sadie's whereabouts, but each time she's moved on. People don't always come forward with the information they know, and not always for nefarious purposes. Sometimes they just don't know something's important.

Sadie had a tough life. Her addict mother had …

Wow! I couldn't stop listening! Imagine being the people inside of a true crime podcast... what a great take on the medium. Get the audiobook. Great performances... Emotional, dramatic, tense, heartbreaking. There is so much more to say, but I don't want to spoil it. Don't read anything about it, just get it. You will never listen to a true crime podcast the same again.
