There are quite a few issues with this book. The pacing is questionable throughout, only settling into a good rhythm for the last battle. The depictions of the various animals are... questionable, more often than not. Some of the language is dated in mildly uncomfortable ways. There are a lot of scenes that just prolong the book without doing anything interesting.
But generally, this is a great story of a little mouse growing into his destiny as a mighty warrior. It's surprisingly vicious considering the target audience (which I thought I knew having read it when I was the target audience, but damn, lots of gruesome deaths in there), and there were a surprising number of times where I started tearing up. I don't know that I'd actually recommend it to adults, but maybe a good one to read to (slightly older) kids.
