"Forty years after the God Wars, Dresediel Lex bears the scars of liberation--especially in the Skittersill, a poor district still bound by the fallen gods' decaying edicts. As long as the gods' wards last, they strangle development; when they fail, demons will be loosed upon the city. The King in Red hires Elayne Kevarian of the Craft firm Kelethres, Albrecht, and Ao to fix the wards, but the Skittersill's people have their own ideas"--

I really liked this book. As someone who has read the other Craft Sequence books, this was a great look at the past of the setting of Two Serpents Rise. But, the book is written well enough that knowledge from that book isn't necessary to enjoy this one.

The pacing of this story about rebuilding after conquest was mostly great. There was only one section of action toward the very end that I needed to read through a couple times to make sure I understood all of what was happening. On the whole though, I recommend this book if you feel like magical lawyers trying to rebuild a city after war might be an interesting concept. That sentence might sound lame, but the book really is good.
