The first book in a mystery series starring the former pop sensation Heather Wells is a tad underwhelming, albeit an entertaining page-turner. Though Heather is a likable character, her narration can be annoying, and I sometimes wished for an omniscient narrative voice. For example, the repeated phrase ". . . the dorm--I mean, residence hall . . ." was worn out within the first few chapters. I thought (hoped) it would stop as Heather became more comfortable with her job, but it didn't.

Heather is working at a New York college as an assistant residence director, trying to carve out a new place in life. During the first semester, two freshmen die in apparent accidents, though Heather is suspicious. After all, young women just don't elevator surf. So she starts to investigate on her own, risking her own life in the process. If that weren't enough, Heather wonders whether her …
