Dayna Anderson doesn't set out to solve a murder. All the semifamous, mega-broke actress wants is to help her parents keep their house. So after witnessing a deadly hit-and-run, she pursues the fifteen grand reward. But Dayna soon finds herself doing a full-on investigation, wanting more than just money―she wants justice for the victim. She chases down leads at paparazzi hot spots, celeb homes, and movie premieres, loving every second of it―until someone tries to kill her. And there are no second takes in real life.

A good, wholesome mystery

4 stars

This book is good. It's full of twists and turns, and with a surprising ending... although I say that, but you know, when you discover the truth, it has you thinking, "Oh, of COURSE it has to be that!" But before that point, you don't consider that that's the way it's going to end.

Another thing I enjoyed about it is the lack of swearing, including blasphemy. In fact, at one point, one of the characters mentions something about how they got so mad they almost used the Lord's name in vain. Which isn't to say that this book is for children, of course. It's clearly aimed at adults.

If you enjoy a modern murder mystery, and you like wholesome reads, I think you'll enjoy this series.

Remember the name Kellye Garrett. You can thank me later.

In this light-hearted take on the serious business of murder, Dayna Anderson, ex-actress soon to be broke couch-surfer, sees the opportunity to get out of debt and save her parents' home. Just solve the murder, collect the reward.

The catch? Well, she has to solve the murder and phone the LAPD Tip Line to collect her reward.

Oh, and not get killed herself.

Easy peasy.

Garrett's narrative flows like water in a friendly creek, burbling over stones and taking unexpected dips and twists that delight at every turn. Her characters - Dayna, Emme, and Sienna - glimmer on the pages. Dayna's frantic attempts to be the first to phone in the tip, and her relationship with The Voice on the other end, flows through the story, a familiar and appreciated running gag.

You don't need to be S. S. VanDine …

So much fun. Day is very relateable - as in suspecting simply everyone. Like everyone. Poor tip line lady, actually.
It was obviously the first book in a series, with a lot of setting the scene - friendships, partners with unexplained backgrounds, how to amateur sleuth to make money, you name it, but that wasn't as annoying as it could have been. In fact it just balanced teasing further info without outright saying "But I'm not telling you just now."
