A fresh take on Little House on the Prairie
4 stars
Fantastic for anyone who is interested in a more diverse Little House on the Prairie. Hanna is half Chinese and half white, living in a small town in the 1800s. She wants to go to school and is faced with racism from the other townspeople who don’t want her to go to school with their children. This book does a great job of not shying away from the racism while also keeping it appropriate for a younger audience. The end is also masterful as it does not leave everything tied up, there are many more challenges our protagonist will face. While not a heartwarming read, the protagonist finds good people amongst the others and works to gain acceptance in her community.
