As someone who has watched the TV series first, and only recently started picking up the novels, I enjoyed and recommend this novel for any fan. My memory is terrible, but I believe this was leveraged only partially as source material for the TV series. As such, it's new to me, and it's quite a thrilling ride. You'll have to make peace with the idea that this is a mystery or police procedural -- it really is just a story about the life of Dexter: our favourite serial killer. Once you get past that, you're left with Jeff Lindsay's description of a sociopath's point of view, and I find myself equally confused at the behaviour of the people around Dexter and sympathizing with him. The continuing tension between Dexter and Doakes is superb, and while there is a strange sort of finale, it's a satisfying one. Recommended.

This one was a bit of an improvement over Lindsay's first Dexter novel, Darkly Dreaming Dexter.

Dexter becomes a more rounded character, which has the side effect of making him a more sympathetic character than in the previous novel.

This one was well written enough that I will trudge on into the third Dexter novel.

The second book in the Dexter series; Dearly Devoted Dexter sees a shadowy, sadistic silhouette of Sgt. Doakes following Dexter Morgan. While some of the book is featured in the TV show, this is the beginning of the break away. The TV show taking on different stories, which is good for Dexter fans. Now you can read about different adventures of Dexter and actually see the character as intended. Amidst all the chaos, Dexter finds himself accidentally engaged to his girlfriend Rita and begins to have suspicions of Cody (Rita’s youngest child) of sociopathic tendencies that Dexter himself had as a child. Dearly Devoted Dexter is a little weaker than its predecessor but still enjoyable.
