Erotica is not my subject of choice. I like romance just fine, but I find sex scenes to be a bit repetitive/dry/boring when there's so many in a row. But, you can't deny this book series hasn't made a big impact, for better or worse, and I dislike commenting on things I haven't read for myself.
So, I gave it a shot.
I thought the series as a whole was okay. Christian and Ana are one heck of a train wreck relationship, but they had as many cute/healthy moments as they did disastrous ones and I think that's what made the series so appealing to such a wide audience. They're a little soap opera of ups and downs between Christian's control issues and Ana trying to figure out her feelings.
The writing is middle ground. It's nothing fantastic, but it's not awful either. It's readable, and has it's up and …

Plot wise, it's a pretty standard fantasy romance: Super rich bad boy turns out to be a hurt and abused man who is helped through his issues by a woman who loves him and refuses to give up on him. Christian worships Ana above all others, at his best and at his worst, and Ana loves him back. It's not realistic, nor is it a relationship I think anyone should base a real one off, but it is interesting. Ana and Christian pick at each other, and help each other, and I don't know. It's a romance, drama, erotica soap opera that borders on dubious consent (Christian's issues concerning his desire to control Ana and her actions are pretty unhealthy, but do get better by the third book) and hurt/comfort (to grab a term from fanfiction land).
If that's your thing, I think you'll like the series. If it's not? I wouldn't read it. Simple.
I thought it was okay. There was stuff I liked (their e-mail conversations back and forth between the three books were my favorite part of the book), and some stuff I didn't (when Ana caved to Christian's demands, when she probably should have held her own ground). I'm in the middle.
Whatever it was, it was interesting and I can see how so many people decided they needed to pick it up and have a read.
