Heavenly Tyrant

Overall feelings: the ideas were fun, the middle felt like it dragged on, and the politics often felt heavy handed

The part of this book that I enjoyed the most and felt like was the strongest was all of the interpersonal dynamics. The first book ends with waking up the legendary emperor Qin Zheng, who in this book takes control immediately. The triangle dynamics of Zetian, Shimin, and Yizhi from the first book are broken up, with Shimin hostaged, Yizhi becoming Qin Zheng's advisor, and Zetian becoming Qing Zheng's wife. There's a lot of good tension between the fact that Qin Zheng is an authoritarian tyrant that rules with violence, but also establishes some policies that try to address inequalities from the previous regime. Zetian loathes his controlling nature, but also finds that he listens and can be extremely reasonable when given policy advice. And, all in the background, the …

Drastic Actions and Drastic Consequences

“I mourn the people we could have been if a different world had shaped us.”

A fantastic sequel, as well as a masterclass in how to continue raising the stakes in the middle of a series while not taking anything away from what drew people to it in the first place. While Iron Widow was a clear reimagining of the anime Darling in the Franxx, Heavenly Tyrant shows that the worldbuilding established in the first volume leaves more than enough room for the series to stand on its own terms as a fantasy sci-fi space opera in its own right.

This volume also addressed the only real complaint I had for the last book. To pull a line from that review - 'The book is already hundreds of pages - some extra space to properly flesh out scenes wouldn't be that much more to ask, would it?' That wish came …

Power to the labouring class!

A fantastic follow up to the original Iron Widow. Whereas IW is a rip roaring tale of beautiful and glorious revenge and venting of righteous anger the sequel Heavenly Tyrant does a lot more heavy world building and complex character and relationship exploration. It pays off, but the vibe is subtly different, there are still some glorious moments of very justified and cathartic ranting from the protag Wu Zetian but also a lot more wrestling with consequence and social fallout. It does however answer a lot of questions about why the world is like it is, and then looks at the consequences for this as well as examining interpersonal and social power issues. Only issue is some parts felt a little long but also none of it felt superfluous, hard to explain. Look its just really good ok :)

What even is this?

I don't know how to review this book, other than to say that it made an impact and I love all of the things it is doing. It is on some level a YA fantasy romance, on another level it's absolutely a serious book for adults about power dynamics in relationships, and then there's the part where it's a beautiful and compelling exploration of political issues and relationships on a national level, unpacking all of the problems with power and wealth and how to revolutionize or revolt against those systems.
