Did not live up to expectations. There was nothing about this story that mirrored The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the setting felt paper thin, the plot was completely predictable, and the characters are cardboard YA templates. Basically 20 year olds with the maturity of 13 year olds. Just disappointing.

Andy P. commented on The Year of the Griffin (Gollancz) by Diana Wynne Jones
This feels like Diana Wynne Jones (Howl’s Moving Castle) is getting out some pent up issues with academia (justly so). Which is funny because she’s also the student who kept showing up to JRR Tolkien’s mumbled lectures when he was (apparently) hoping students would stop attending so he could go back to his real work.
