For more than ten years, a mysterious and violent predator committed fifty sexual assaults in Northern California before moving south, where he perpetrated ten sadistic murders. Then he disappeared, eluding capture by multiple police forces and some of the best detectives in the area. Three decades later, Michelle McNamara, a true crime journalist who created the popular website TrueCrimeDiary.com, was determined to find the violent psychopath she called "the Golden State Killer." Michelle pored over police reports, interviewed victims, and embedded herself in the online communities that were as obsessed with the case as she was. I'll Be Gone in the Dark-the masterpiece McNamara was writing at the time of her sudden death-offers an atmospheric snapshot of a moment in American history and a chilling account of a criminal mastermind and the wreckage he left behind. Review of "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" on 'Goodreads'

This was definitely a disappointment :-( It may be that I totally misjudged what it was about, but I really expected more of the case built for the particular Golden State killer. I suppose that the subtitle of the book should have told me that it was more about the woman obsessed with the case than the case itself or the perpetrator. But even in that, it didn't seem to be as much about her as the search in general. For instance, I totally missed her marriage and who her husband was. It's possible that was brought out and I just missed it, but somehow it was about her and her obsession, it should of had more details about her more prominent. I don't know. Review of "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" on 'Storygraph'

4.5 stars rounded up.

Wrote a longer review for C-Spot Reviews but here's the gist: I enjoyed this book so much. There were times when I felt overwhelmed by all the information, names, and dates but by halfway through, I didn't want to stop listening. (I think this might have been easier to read with a physical copy or an ebook. Highlighting would have been helpful.)

This is more than just a true crime book (one without graphic violence and crime scene descriptions), it's a story about the author and her obsession.

I absolutely recommend.
