This is a classic collection from Ali Duaji, who was involved with the Taht Essour group on Bab Souika. The best stories in the collection are “Uncle Bakhir,” “A Criminal in Spite of Himself,” “The Lighted Corner,” and my absolute favorite, “A Pleasant Outing.”

If nothing else, Duaji is funny, and he pokes fun at the self-pitying, self-righteous folks in society. He also seems to somehow understand desire and how it operates.

Well-worth the read. The translation was produced decades ago, but it’s still the best sample of Duaji in English. I wish there were similar texts with more of Duaji’s writings, as well as comparable books by others who were active in Taht Essour.
