Fantastic addition to the series. Can't wait for the next installment.

"Diviner Alex Verus finally made one too many enemies on the Council of mages, and now one of them is angry enough to have him executed. Fighting for his life is nothing new for Alex, but this kill order also calls for the deaths of his dependents--and there's no way he'll let Luna, Anne, and Variam take the heat."--Cover, page [4].

This was a good book. For some reason, and maybe it's just a late series reader plateau, but it didn't grab me as much until near the end. Again it's a good story, it has the episodic elements you like, Alex is hitting his stride, everyone is working hard--the tangle they find themselves in is just a btch of a time.
3.5--3.75?
Reading this makes me wonder where the end-game for Alex is. Does this series have a destination? We are seeing an evolving arc, a plotline that has some good twists, not too dark, good self sacrifice and friendship. Nice elements all and all. Is the big play with Richard? Is it with Alex and finding.. what peace? That doesn't sound right. Will there ever be a 'happily ever after' or a different series to spin out?

This book was like a Wednesday looking towards the weeks end. I enjoyed it. I like this cast, but I can't help wonder where we're driving to.
As an aside, I could easily see an American version, or a mage in Japan series, etc. Lots of good narratives could come from this world.
