After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty.
Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.
Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.
Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything.
They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth.
But a storm is coming...and not everyone can survive its wrath.

The plot was lacking yet the cheesiness from the preceding books continued apace. Mostly okay.
EDIT: also author might be zionist too??? Not loving that....
Loved reading through this book. Where I thought the first two books slapped me in the face with their endings, I loved them that much, this book just suckerpunched me and then kicked me when I was down hahahaha. I can't wait for the next book, but it looks like I have to wait a tiny bit longer this time than last time haha
Fun addition to the series, a perfect distraction when going on long runs. Looking forward to #4.
4.5 rounded up. Yarros does not disappoint in the 3rd installment, and it just keeps getting better.
This is a tough book to review. I really enjoyed the first two, with the Violet and Xaden drama getting old pretty early on into Iron Flame. But this book it was unbearable. The characters did poke fun at it a bit which was nice, but it still continued and was a real drag on the story.
The story was well done and had some good twists I wasn’t expecting to see, and there were some truly heart wrenching moments.
spoilers ahead
Quinn’s death made me cry, which I wasn’t expecting. A lot of the character deaths in this series had been not a huge deal, but this was so well done it hit me hard.
Andarna leaving was super sad and I felt for her in that whole conflict, that part was really well done.
The ending with Xaden leaving and Violet married to him was good but also …

The ending with Xaden leaving and Violet married to him was good but also super obvious.
The smut got dull, every scene boiled down to “oh man I want to but if I do I might lose control and kill you. Oh well let’s try”.
The narrator also didn’t do it for me. They made everything super intense, even scenes that were supposed to be soft and caring she just yelled through them, which was frustrating. I think if I had read the book instead of listened I would have enjoyed the book more.
Not to detract from the plot planning of the author, the entire first two books were hiding a litany of secrets from the characters. So unfortunately plot progress doesn’t happen as much as backstory is filled in. The world building is incredible but we are left wanting more especially as this book ends on multiple cliff hangers.
