I have definitely enjoyed the cadence of this book, and while the fantasy tropes are very strong, it’s still manages to be an enjoyable read. I have strong predictions on where the story will end, but let’s wait and see.

Mark finished reading Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson (The Stormlight Archive, #5)
Content warning Spoilers for the ending of Stormlight Archive Era 1.
I found Wind and Truth to be a disappointing end to this Era arc. I find the ending somewhat reminiscent of Eddings (who, while I love, is predictable) where there is an epic battle to .. reject/shun the big bad? The meta plot remains and I felt Sanderson wanted his cake and to eat it too. I am not a master plotter, but it appears a LOT of corners were cut in order to bring Roshar back into the Cosmere timeline while still keeping things unchanged.
Mark reviewed Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros (The Empyrean, #3)
Massive increase in scope, limited progress in plot.
4 stars
Not to detract from the plot planning of the author, the entire first two books were hiding a litany of secrets from the characters. So unfortunately plot progress doesn’t happen as much as backstory is filled in. The world building is incredible but we are left wanting more especially as this book ends on multiple cliff hangers.
Mark finished reading Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros (The Empyrean, #3)
While worthy of the epic world building that is associated with the first two books, this advances the plot in only a small way. However while moving only a small way forward, its scope gains a massive breadth.
