Beneath the gaze of the gods, the mighty armies of Greece and Troy met in fierce and glorious combat, scrupulously following the text set forth in Homer's timeless narrative. But that was before one observer -- Twenty-first Century scholar Thomas Hockenberry -- stirred the bloody brew; before an enraged Achilles joined forces with his archenemy Hector; and before the fleet-footed mankiller turned his murderous wrath on Zeus, Hera, Athena, Aphrodite, Apollo, and the entire pantheon of divine manipulators. Now, all bets are off. A nice culmination. The geek in me loves Simmons science. The history and poetic buff slows and enjoys the moments.

My only real beef with this book was the story meanders a bit more than necessary but with all the thought and given to these two novels it'll be ok.

It is baffling how boring this book actually is on a second read. I read it mostly for answers to all the questions and mysteries that were brought up in Ilium and possibly because i forgot or did not care about them after the first read (years ago). Characters serve mainly as receivers or givers of such answers, either because they suddenly come up with the 'theory of everything' or by literally soaking up the knowledge (of a couple of million books). Character Development seems unnecessary, since most of them spend their time travelling (slowly).
