The Lover

An intense book. If you started this book because you heard about the smut (or saw the movie with lots of skin), you will be disappointed.

What is really intense is all the misery, the misery of the family, the misery of this love that exists only in a grotesque parody, the misery of the boarding schools. Above all and defining all this, the misery of colonialism. Colonialism that heaps misery on the local people, but also onto the people sent there to "administer" that colony or who try to get their personal gain in this all and simply find their banal inconsequential life.

A lot of "stream of consciousness" writing. It took me a while to keep me from trying to "keep in mind" what exactly was happening and when, and instead let myself drift in the stream. I found the book to be ending on a slightly positive thought ... but honestly that could be disputed.

In het autofictieve L’amant beschrijft Marguerite Duras (1914-1996) de affaire van een eigenzinnige 15-jarige met een twaalf jaar oudere Chinese man in Saigon in Frans-Indochina, het huidige Vietnam. Duras' stijl is onderkoeld; het is niet haar bedoeling geweest de lezer mee te nemen in een gepassioneerd spel tussen twee mensen. In plaats daarvan graaft de schrijver in haar geheugen op een manier die me deed denken aan [b:Mémoire de fille|38889468|Mémoire de fille|Annie Ernaux|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1519880546l/38889468.SY75.jpg|50107801] van Annie Ernaux, zij het minder expliciet.Duras is echter provocerender en helaas niet altijd goed te volgen. Hij huilt vaak, zij denkt voortdurend aan haar familie, samen lijken ze te begrijpen dat dit overgaat. Door de veranderende perspectieven, de abrupte overgangen en niet te vergeten de taal – ik las de originele versie – heb ik ongetwijfeld niet alles goed begrepen. Evenals andere moderne Franse schrijvers als Camus, Ernaux en Houellebecq lijkt ook Duras haar verhaal met opzet van een afstandje te beschouwen. Daarmee creëert ze een bijzondere sfeer die ik tegelijkertijd niet altijd goed kon bevatten.
