If I Had Your Face plunges us into the mesmerising world of contemporary Seoul - a place where extreme plastic surgery is as routine as getting a haircut, where women compete for spots in secret 'room salons' to entertain wealthy businessmen after hours, where K-Pop stars are the object of all-consuming obsession and ruthless social hierarchies dictate your every move.

Navigating this cutthroat city are four young women balancing on the razor edge of survival: Kyuri, an exquisitely beautiful woman whose hard-won status at an exclusive 'room salon' is threatened by an impulsive mistake with a client; her flatmate, Miho, an orphan who wins a scholarship to a prestigious art school in New York, where her life becomes tragically enmeshed with the super-wealthy offspring of the Korean elite; Wonna, their neighbour, pregnant with a child that she and her husband have no idea how they will afford to raise in …

"I would live your life so much better than you, if I had your face."

An interesting story about four women living in the same officetel (a style of housing in Korea with mixed purpose units available for rent). Each has their own different background and life story, but because of their living situation in the same building, all four know each other very well. We learn each woman’s story through their different chapters, each one taking a different woman’s point of view. Ara is a hair stylist who, because of a traumatic injury when she was in high school, cannot speak, and has a crush on the lead singer of a K-pop band. Kyuri is a “room salon girl”, like a high class prostitute, who works for a madam and wines and dines expensive clients. Miho is an artist who grew up poor, earned a scholarship to a prestigious …

Taylor Jenkins Reid has a thing for parents. Be it absenteeism, genuine love and support or emotional abuse, Jenkins Reid doesn't let up on her characters and their relationship with parents. Malibu Rising is a story about generations of parents and the lasting effects their presence, or lack or, has on their children and their children's children.

Nina didn't hate Carrie Soto for stealing her husband because husbands can't be stolen. Carrie Soto wasn't a thief; Brandon Randall was a traitor.

The redemption arc for Soto in Carrie Soto is Back is a bit more enjoyable with her appearance in Malibu Rising. The b*tch is back rings true because Carrie is cold, ruthless and lacking emotion. Had I heard Malibu Rising first I would have found myself hating Carrie for a good portion of the book, maybe all of it.

And Nina understood, maybe for the first time, that …

I couldn't put this one down. Taylor Jenkins Reid knows how to write compelling characters and I loved getting to know all the Rivas.

Edit: Also, I love that Mick isn't forgiven in the end. It's so different than other family dramas where re-integrating the toxic person into the family is the "happy ending."

This book has a ridiculous number of characters to keep track of, but there are really only six who matter, so it feels really cluttered. At its core, this is a story about family, responsibility and the bonds that hold, so you would think I would've felt more for the characters. I usually enjoy Taylor Jenkins Reid's books, but this one was just "meh" for me, though I can't quite put my finger on why it fell flat.
